How to Join the Blog Carnival (Called How to Find Great Plants – HtFGP)

In November 2010 I decided to host a monthly carnival called How to Find Great Plants.” (HtFGP for short).

Posts in this carnival should be about a food or ornamental plant that you’d recommend to others. For example, you might want to describe your love affair with sedums or your preference for ‘Rattlesnake’ pole beans. Photos-only posts are fine as long as yimageou label the plant pictured. Use the scientific name or not — it’s up to you!

This is a slightly hybridized blog carnival. All qualifying entries will be included but each issue will be designed to look like a newsletter. A handful of the best submissions will be highlighted each time with thumbnail photos and a review.

Entry due dates will be the last Friday of the month, and publication will occur the following Monday (check for the due date & submission widget in the right sidebar on my blog). Please include a link to Appalachian Feet in your entries (you can use http://www.appalachianfeet.com/ since the carnival link isn’t available until the publishing date).

It’s easy to participate, here’s what to do:

  • Write a new blog post or reuse an “oldie but goodie” that recommends a plant you love (it does not have to be published on the issue’s due date, just sometime prior to it)
  • Make sure your blog post includes at least one photo of the recommended plant and that your links and info are up-to-date
  • Click on the blue frog icon in the sidebar to submit your post (one post can be submitted per issue)

Updated information, scheduling, and archives for this carnival can be found at its new homepage.

What a fun idea! I’ll have see if we have anything recent and link worthy. In the meantime, those tomatoes really are crazy looking! Good to read (in your last post) that they taste good too!

Thanks! I’d love to have you participate. Those weird tomatoes are great — I’ve tried out a lot of novelties that didn’t taste like much but fortunately these get full marks. :)

Eliza, I bet this is going to be a great carnival! I have nothing recent to offer, after going on a two-plus-month hiatus, but as soon as I get up and going again, I may have something for you. Meanwhile, I’ll enjoy checking out the entries. :)

That’s a great idea! I’ve been working up to trying to record some of my favourite plants on my blog for future reference, so if I get my act together I will join in! Thansk for dropping by my blog and leaving a comment.

That would be great! I’m hoping for it to turn into a great source of gardener-recommended plants.

    Hi Eliza,
Here is my Tagetes post for the carnival.

I guess my best idea for how to find great plants is on a garden tour, whether it’s one of your friend’s gardens or even a self-guided tour of a public garden, then ask the gardener if you can about the plants that intrigue you!

Thanks for commenting on my blog. I have added the ginger link as you suggested – hope I did it all correctly! Great idea to consolidate posts on growing different things.

Hey! I didn’t get one from you… was it the strawberries? I’m actually still working on the post. I was trying some new plugins to try to change the thumbnail format and I’m experiencing technical difficulties. It will be out today, though!

Hi! yes the strawberries, I inputed it in the blogcarnival.com website the day you left me the comment, maybe it got sorted around. Great that you fixed the problem, I am looking forward to see all the recommendations. What plugging are you using? I found inlinkz to be good, but they only give you thumbnails once, unless you pay. Good for starters tho.

I didn’t find any plugins that let me use links to photos instead of the actual files. So, I’m still trying to find something. I’ll check out inlinkz, thanks!

What a great idea. Thanks for stopping by and I did take your advice and put my ‘Mom’s Special’ Dahlia post on. Glad I didn’t have to come up with a new one for now since it’s so horrible and ugly outside. 😉
