How to Name Six Chickens

Here’s a quick photo essay to introduce you to our little flock (now 5 weeks old).

Photo Caption: This is "Combustion Spur Lava Beak" (named by my daughter), an Easter Egger who will lay blue, green, or pink eggs. I'm not sure what a suitable nickname for her will be...

Photo Caption: "Mrs. Poultrious BokBok" (named by my fiancée) is a lavender/orange Easter Egger. She'll be known as Mrs. BokBok most of the time.

Photo Caption: "LaZertron Eggonater" (also named by my fiancée) is a cuckoo maran that lays dark brown eggs. I've been informed that her correct nickname is "Ol' LaZertron."

Photo Caption: "Miss Lilac Luna Pumpkintoes, Fairy Killer Extraordinaire" (named by me) is absolutely the cutest Easter Egger ever to exist. I've been calling her "Lilac" but my daughter prefers "Fairy Killer."

Photo Caption: "Pecksterecksious Radioactive Alpha Peep" (named by my daughter) is a rose comb brown leghorn who lays white eggs. She answers to "Peckster."

Photo Caption: And this is "Acorn" (named by me). She's a brown leghorn, too.

It’s amazing that it only took 5 weeks for them to go from this (the extra 21 chicks in this video go to some farming friends of ours):

Yay for our chickens!

Adorable! I’m having chick withdrawal this spring, as we didn’t raise any this year. I think “Miss Lilac Luna Pumpkintoes, Fairy Killer Extraordinaire” is my favorite 😉 Just think, only about four more months to go, and you’ll have lots of different colored eggs!

I know!!! Although I admit that I thought it was going to be so hard to wait until they were egg-ready… nope! They’re so cute and entertaining that I haven’t been that worried about having them produce. I’m sorry for your chick withdrawal… maybe Jenny turkey will fix that for you.

I know the feeling… I think I waited 5 years before I could get mine. Regarding the names, thanks! At first I was inclined to name them simply, but my fiancée & daughter were having such a grand time coming up with even grander names that I was charmed by the humor of it. It’s not like the chickens will care, and nicknames are easy to come by. :)

Well, I once had a frog named ‘Theophrastus Bombastus Thorndike’, but I don’t think even that can compete with the original names your family came up with for your chicks! They are all very cute, and no doubt they will have personalities to live up to their names.

Ooh, I think that totally equals our family’s flock! My daughter & fiancée would approve whole-heartedly. :)

These are the most creative names ever for chickens. Even humble little Acorn’s name is cute. They look like they really have a good home.

Thanks! My daughter was slightly disappointed in the brevity of Acorn’s name, but it makes the other names extra hilarious for me.

You have some very showy names. I like Acorn. It’s the only one I can pronounce or remember.

My mom would agree with you — she rolls her eyes when she can’t pronounce names (human or other animals). I feel okay about choosing long, ironic names when it is an animal like a chicken, since they could care less. I’d hate to confuse a smarter animal that needs a low-syllable name (like a dog), though.

Wow, those are the most imaginative names I have ever heard of chickens having. You all had way too much fun naming them. I like “Fairy Killer” and I hope they are all very productive in their egg-laying. With such thought as to their names I think they are well-loved.

We did have a ton of fun (and lots of uncontrolled giggles). It has enhanced their personalities for us which makes them even more lovable. :)

Yep! My daughter told me (disbelievingly) that of course the correct nickname for the first chicken is “Lava Beak.” Haha!

I didn’t think that chickens would have such fancy names! I thought people called them things like “Doris” and “Penny” :-)

Did you mean “fancy” or “absurd?” 😉 I think “Lilac” and “Acorn” qualify… but maybe not “Ol’ LaZertron.”

Delightful, and hilarious. Acorn is a nice contrast to the more baroque names.

Yeah! I hope we get some blue and green ones, I’m more excited about those colors than the “pink” ones, which I think look more like light brown.
